I went to the health food store/café this afternoon for some alone time. Certain creatures had a different idea. No sooner had I pulled out my Kindle and started reading when a busy bee stopped by for a close encounter. I shooed it away and seconds later there were two, the second one very interested in my backpack. Neither one would be distracted form their task.
Fine, says I, you can have this table. I moved several feet and a few tables away. Two paragraphs later they were back, this time trying to make a home in my hair. I didn’t use a new body care products today so I have no idea what was attracting them. Realizing I wasn’t going to get any more reading done just then, I decided to walk my ride to the local bike repair shop for an adjustment.
I tapped my pocket. No keys. I looked in my backpack. No keys. I found them on the ground beside my bike. Okeydokey then.
On the short walk to the bike shop I passed a lady who was looking at the ground, making odd sounds. Passing by where she had just been, I saw why. Two apparently untouched birds, one on each end of the same sidewalk square, lay motionless. Yeeps!
Leaving the bike shop I remembered I’d forgotten to buy a few items before fleeing the store. I walked back. During the few seconds it took to lock and then unlock my bike again, those bees came back to visit. Perhaps I used more mousse than normal this morning?
Anyway, it was all quite odd.
On the plus side:
our front garden is full of all different kinds of butterflies. I watched two (looked like Monarchs) flit from one patch of purple clover to another earlier today. Neither seemed to mind me standing near, admiring their delicate beauty.
because of the bees I wasn't sitting long without my keys, so not much time for someone else to notice them.
and
on my second trip to the store I overheard a woman telling the barista about her years as an ice dancer. Hoping she wouldn't mind, I visited her table and told her I used to be a competitive skater. We enjoyed a lively conversation and many smiles.
