Kittens scatter Lego heads, water sloshes in the washing machine, snow slides off the truck’s windshield, and I stare into space, letting quiet be my company.
It’s shattered by boys yelling “Mom!” with requests I needn’t really answer. This balance of daily life, maintaining a serenity in the midst of it, is elusive but necessary. I’ll keep on.
A truth arrived in my nearly-to-sleep last night: the possibility of becoming disabled by regret is far less than the possibility of becoming disabled by making decisions based on the fear of regret. It’s all fear one way or the other, and “Love is a light that never dwelleth in a heart possessed by fear.”*
I watch our kittens play fight, their posture like standing, flying squirrels playing patty cake in slow motion just out of sync. Prairie grasses wave on our neighbors’ lawn, high above the fallen snow. Bare branches stand tall and brown, barely moving in the icy January wind.
I wrap a quilt around my shoulders and wait.
